FAQ

  • 1. What is Sigma Phi Omega?
  • Sigma Phi Omega is an Asian-interest social/service sorority. We are one of the oldest in the nation, and after sixty years, we are still going as strong as ever. For more information, please see our About and Philanthropy pages. To get to know our girls, please visit the Sisters page.

  • 2. Who can join?
  • We pride ourselves in being a diverse and open group. Our sisters come from different ethnic backgrounds with different aspirations and personalities. We each had our own motivations to join Sigma Phi Omega, and we each have benefited in different ways. As long as you are female and have a deep desire to make new friends, perform community service, and seek leadership roles, you will feel at home with us!

  • 3. Why should I join?
  • There are several reasons why joining Sigma Phi Omega can benefit you. As one of the oldest Asian-interest sororities in the nation, we can offer you a place in a strong and extensive network that has withstood the test of time. Going to college is an exciting but often scary experience. Sigma Phi is a great organization to join to meet new people with different interests and to make lasting friendships. It is also the right sorority to join if you are looking to exercise your leadership abilities and skills, as we have several leadership positions available every semester. The best way to decide whether or not you should join would be to come out to our rush events and see and talk to us yourself!

  • 4. I am interested in joining your sorority. How can I apply to join?
  • You've come to the right place for more information about our chapter of Sigma Phi Omega! While reading our history and our profiles will certainly help you in making your decision, we highly encourage you to come to our rush events to get to know us better and speak to us in person. Paper applications must be completed during a rush event to be considered for a bid.

  • 5. What happens during rush?
  • During our rush period, we will generally host six to eight events, both on- and off-campus, to give you a chance to come out and see what we're all about. At a rush event, you are expected to do nothing but have fun and be yourselves! We will ask you to fill out an application at a rush event and will also ask you sit down to a private interview with a few actives to get to know you a little better.

  • 6. What happens after rush?
  • After the rush period is over and after careful consideration of all applications, the actives will extend bids, which are formal invitations to join our sorority, to the rushees whom we would like to see as an active. Rushees are free to accept or decline their bids for whatever reason - there is no obligation for you to accept your bid!

  • 7. I am hesitant to join a sorority. I don't want my grades to drop!
  • Our organization's GPA is the highest in the Multicultural Greek Council as well as in the entire Greek community on campus (2008 and 2009). As fellow university students, we understand that school, work, and family are your priorities and would never ask for you to put the sorority first. We require that all of our actives maintain an overall GPA of 2.5. We encourage good study habits by setting up mandatory study hours and by forming efficient study groups.

  • 8. I am not interested in partying or drinking.
  • Partying and drinking alcohol are lifestyle choices made by each individual. Not all of our sisters party or drink, and we would never force them to do so if they did not want to. Parties are not the only social events the sorority has to offer.

  • 9. What is the meaning of sisterhood?
  • That's just something you'll have to answer for yourself! Come check us out!
